Student Code of Conduct

Support, Safety and Accountability

Sometimes a student needs support. Sometimes a situation raises concerns about safety or behavior. And sometimes a concern may involve both. At Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Student CARE and the Student Code of Conduct work together to help support a safe, respectful and successful learning environment.

When a Concern Involves Student Conduct

Some situations may also involve a possible violation of the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) Student Code of Conduct.

A Student Conduct referral is a formal submission to the college's conduct office that reports an alleged violation of the MCCCD Student Code of Conduct. Conduct referrals may initiate a review or investigation of alleged behavioral or academic misconduct.

The purpose of the Student Code of Conduct is to help ensure a productive, safe and respectful environment for students, employees and visitors.

The Student Code of Conduct establishes expectations for student behavior and provides a process for addressing alleged violations. A conduct referral does not, by itself, establish that a violation occurred. The concern is reviewed through the applicable student conduct process.

CARE and Conduct Can Work Together

Student CARE and Student Conduct serve different purposes, but they may overlap.

Student CARE focuses on support, well-being, safety and connecting students with appropriate resources. Student Conduct focuses on addressing alleged violations of college expectations and the Student Code of Conduct.

When appropriate, a CARE concern may be referred to or coordinated with the Student Conduct process. This allows CGCC to respond to the full situation—providing support when a student needs it while also addressing concerns about behavior or policy violations.

How the Student Code of Conduct Fits with Other Policies

The MCCCD Student Code of Conduct is not a stand-alone policy. Depending on the circumstances, other policies and administrative regulations may also apply. These include:

  • AR 5.1.16 — Title IX
  • AR 6.24 — Free Expression
  • AR 5.1 — Non-Discrimination

Other MCCCD policies and administrative regulations may also intersect with the Student Code of Conduct depending on the circumstances of a particular concern. This means that a situation may involve more than one college policy or process. Appropriate college personnel will help determine which policies and procedures apply.

Not Sure Which One to Use?

You don't have to decide. If you're concerned about a student or a situation and you're unsure whether it is a CARE concern, a conduct concern, or both, start with CARE. The appropriate college professionals can review the concern, assess the situation and help determine the appropriate next steps.
